Lineage & Origins

Northern Lights has a complex origin story that traces to Afghani landrace genetics developed in the Pacific Northwest — specifically Seattle, Washington — in the 1970s, before being brought to the Netherlands and refined by Sensi Seeds breeder Neville Schoenmakers in the 1980s. The specimen is documented as primarily Afghani indica with potential Thai sativa influence in some versions.

Northern Lights won numerous Cannabis Cup awards in the late 1980s and 1990s, establishing Sensi Seeds as one of the world's premier breeding operations. It has since been used as a parent in hundreds of documented crosses — most famously in Super Silver Haze and numerous other award-winning specimens.

Northern Lights' terpene documentation describes a pure, classic indica aromatic profile: myrcene, caryophyllene, and pinene produce an earthy, piney, slightly sweet fragrance. The profile is clean and consistent — one of the most stable terpene expressions in the indica category.
